I am participating in the group exhibition “José María de Labra. Correspondences,” open from April 1 to August 30, 2025, at the Centro Obra Social ABANCA in Santiago de Compostela. This show is the second chapter in a series dedicated to revisiting the ABANCA and Afundación art collections from a contemporary perspective, encouraging dialogue between generations and artistic languages.
The exhibition pays tribute to José María de Labra (A Coruña, 1925 – Palma de Mallorca, 1994), a key figure in the development of abstraction and normative art in Spain, whose work always sought to merge painting and architecture. The show brings together 55 works, including historical pieces and new creations by invited artists, selected to engage in a dialogue with Labra’s legacy and to rethink abstraction from a contemporary viewpoint.
Among the participating artists are both Galician and national creators who, like myself, explore new possibilities within abstract language. The exhibition also features site-specific proposals created for the occasion and works by artists such as Pablo Barreiro, Almudena Fernández, Tatiana Medal, Kiko Pérez, Arancha Goyeneche, Hisae Ikenaga, Belén Rodríguez, Gloria García Lorca, Carlos Maciá, and Robert Martorell i Ferrer, generating a rich network of visual and conceptual correspondences around Labra’s figure.

Etude Nr. 307, 2024 Acrylic on linen, audio file 1:49’ accessible via QR Code 100 x 140 cm
Making time tangible, I explore the relationship between time and space through repetition. I confront an objective framework (score, concrete space, musical scale) with a subjective framework of time experienced through gesture. My work aims to organically record the passage of time and focuses on the inevitable variations in each repetition.
My artistic practice is inspired by my training as a classical pianist. I do not represent music, but the process of transforming written symbols into sounds. To become a concert pianist, the pianist repeats the same gestures daily to integrate and memorize them. These often circular gestures are reflected in my Études, where I transform rhythmic and cyclical movements into an exploration of pure abstraction, becoming a human metronome. Musical etudes, by their repetitive nature, inspire me to reproduce a circular rhythmic gesture in the form of a continuous line, recording time and covering space. I repeat this sequence to create superimposed layers, witnesses of time.
In Etude Nr. 307, I apply an identical layer of blue glaze over the previous one, using adhesive tape and masking fluid (to create the repetitive circular movement characteristic of this series). This technique allows me to make each step of the creation process visible, capture different moments, and make these layers an essential part of the final work. The audio presents the different sounds produced during the various stages of the process.

This exhibition, or rather this sum of micro exhibitions at the Abstract Project gallery, features the work of 10 artists who think and produce abstract forms. For them, it is about showing accomplished works, elements, and traces of what constituted their research. Analogies, crossings, and creolizations form the path of the artist’s work. These small formats show the richness of the productions echoed and the chosen display forms.

Sons improbábeis explores the different dimensions of sound in the visual arts. On the one hand, it aims to bring together different samples of so-called sound art, an expression that is increasingly present in the work of contemporary artists, while also seeking to investigate the presence of sound and music as an integral part or as a theme of works executed in a combination of media. Thus, languages such as audiovisual or installation, which integrate sound as a fundamental part of their development. On the other hand, Sons improbábeis also aims to visit works by artists who work with music as a theme from more traditional disciplines of artistic practice such as painting or sculpture.
To outline the structure of this exhibition, three thematic axes are considered: a first one related to sound art, which includes works by artists who use sound as the essential raw material from which to construct their work; a second axis dedicated to the relationship of the artistic work with the universe of so-called cultured music in its classical and contemporary developments, as well as in the relationship with its listening spaces or its notation systems; finally, a part of the exhibition will be dedicated to the relationship established between visual art and pop music and the whole universe of imagery that surrounds these musical practices today.

CRUZAMENTOS (INTERSECTIONS) is the final exhibition from the project A Look at Galicia, which invites us to explore our most recent art history through the work of artists whose pieces have been incorporated into the CGAC Collection over the last two decades. It is an exhibition that celebrates the rich and the diverse, connecting long-established artists with young or mid-career creators. Here, voices, sensitivities and stories diverge, but they coincide in addressing, with multiple critical approaches, issues of a social, historical, political identity or artistic nature prevalent at the present moment in time.On Friday, March 4 at 6.30 p.m. in the CGAC auditorium, the curators Sara Donoso and Santiago Olmo, will participate in a public conversation about the exhibition.
A selection of artworks, each composed of more than three hundred paintings, and created in over ten years, make up the Fuzzy series, by Vigo artist Gonzalo Sellés Lenard (Ferrol, 1965) and Étudesby Paris-based artist, Ana Pérez Ventura (Santiago de Compostela, 1981).
The exhibition Synchrony – Time and Gesture immortalizes the intangible time of the creative process from its source to its representation. It values the gesture, the process and the rhythmic variations that are established by repeating lines or an element ad infinitum with an involving effect. The unexpected beauty arises from an erudite technique and a synchronous compositional relationship with nature, music and poetry.
We have conceived these two original and moving realms, in which we address time as a concept, the visual and communicative possibilities of sequencing, repetition and reproducibility to awaken our senses, convey feelings and generate states of mind.
